Selection of the week

Violinist Hilary Hahn, who hails from Baltimore, and pianist Valentina Lisitsa, play the first movement of American composer Charles Ives’s Fourth Sonata.

  1. Is there an odd rhythmic thing around 0:29 with the piano? And another around 1:15 with the violin? At first, they both sounded to me like editing mistakes. After listening to another version online, they seem to be intentional. BTW, movement 3 uses the melody from the hymn “Gather at the River” by Robert Lowry. I only figured it out because I found a trailer for an Ives biopic that has the hymn in it (https://vimeo.com/ondemand/charlesives/92342036).
